We chose our wedding date based on historically good weather- the 24th of July. Ironically, our day completely ruined the trend! It rained so heavily and we had to pause our vows because the thunder was so loud—an absolutely wild storm!
And yet, some of my favourite wedding photos are thanks to that rain. One that stands out is of my dad helping me out of the car, framed perfectly by a cream umbrella.
Rain can bring unexpected beauty to your photos. Moody clouds can create dramatic shots of your venue. Overcast skies mean no squinting, or glasses switching to dark lenses in bright sunlight. But, truthfully, when it came down to it, I didn’t care about the weather at all. All that mattered was marrying Neil.
Yes, my dress ended up filthy, the hem covered in mud. But the photo of us by the oak tree, which now hangs in pride of place on my lounge wall, was worth every bit of dirt.
It’s rare to have a full day of uninterrupted rain. In the last fourteen years of photographing weddings, only a handful have seen no breaks in the rain. We can adjust—shifting the timings to head outside during dry spells or finding picturesque sheltered spots. With the right attitude and a few clear umbrellas, we can create stunning images—romantic moments framed by raindrops or soft lighting enhancing the drizzle.
Consider bringing a second pair of shoes you don’t mind getting wet, umbrellas for your bridal party, and even an old towel to stand on. If you’re choosing a venue during a wetter season, it’s worth checking if there’s enough indoor space for group photos or room for guests to mingle comfortably if the rain keeps everyone inside.
If it rains into the evening, we can use creative lighting to capture the raindrops, turning them into sparkling magic in your night photos.
